Choosing the Solid, Not Settling for It
In October 2025, I clicked "Purchase" on the Durston X-Mid 1 Solid.
My initial feeling was a mix of relief and achievement. Durston Gear is a boutique American cottage brand with no official distributors in Japan, meaning direct import from their website is the only way to get one.
But this "finally got it" feeling had another layer to it.
It was the conclusion of a long internal debate: "Is the Solid really the right choice over the Pro?"
At $289 (approximately 46,000 JPY, or around 51,000 JPY including shipping to Japan), the X-Mid 1 Solid sits in a completely different price bracket compared to the X-Mid Pro 1, which starts at $599 (approximately 95,500 JPY). I spent countless hours opening and closing spreadsheets, scouring Reddit, and bookmarking BackpackingLight forums before making this decision.
This review covers that entire process and my experience since.
Dan Durston: Geometry and First Principles
To talk about Durston Gear, you have to start with its founder, Dan Durston. He’s a gear designer, wilderness guide, and biologist—a unique background that informs his design philosophy. He once said in an interview with BackpackingLight, "Every piece of gear should be designed from the first principles of geometry and physics."
The X-Mid design took years of iteration. Triangle, square, or pentagon? One pole or two? Are struts necessary? By obsessing over these fundamental questions, Dan developed the patented "Double Diagonal" geometry.
By placing two trekking poles on a diagonal, the X-Mid eliminates common trekking pole tent issues like mandatory guy lines, awkward entry angles, and poles blocking the doorway. Setup is as simple as staking out four corners in a rectangle. It’s a low-error design that rewards efficiency.
The X-Mid 1 Solid is positioned as the "all-weather, cold-weather" 1-person model in the lineup. It replaces the standard mesh inner with a 15D solid fabric, significantly increasing wind protection, sand resistance, and warmth during the shoulder seasons and winter.
Technical Deep Dive
Fly and Floor Material: 20D Sil/PEU Polyester
The fly is made of 20D Silicon/PEU coated Polyester, commonly known as "Silpoly."
Many ultralight hikers instinctively believe that "UL Tent = Silnylon." However, there is a very deliberate reason why Durston chooses polyester for the entire X-Mid series.
Let’s look at the fundamental differences between Polyester and Nylon.
Nylon (Polyamide) has a superior strength-to-weight ratio but an absorption rate of 3-4%. This means nylon stretches when wet. Since trekking pole tents rely on fabric tension to maintain their structure, sagging flies during a rainstorm are a major pain point. A tent that looks drum-tight at sunset can become a flapping mess by midnight when the rain starts.
Polyester has an absorption rate of only 0.4%. It doesn’t stretch when wet. This "sag-free" performance is the primary reason Durston chose Silpoly.
Furthermore, polyester has superior UV resistance. While nylon degrades rapidly under UV exposure, polyester degrades at about half that rate under the same conditions. Given that a tent fly is constantly exposed to direct sunlight, this directly impacts long-term durability.
There are trade-offs, of course. Polyester generally has a lower tear strength than nylon of the same weight, and some find it harder to bond adhesives for repairs. However, given the 20D denier and the thickness of the coating on the Solid, I judged it to be more than adequate for typical mountain use.
The 3,500mm waterproof rating is over ten times the pressure of a typical heavy rainstorm. Durston’s internal testing reported that even after simulating 1.5 months of continuous heavy wind and rain, the material maintained a rating of over 1,500mm.

Inner Material: 15D Ripstop Nylon
The solid inner fabric is 15D Ripstop Nylon in white. While "15D" might sound thin, the inner doesn't touch the ground, so the abrasion requirement is low. This fabric provides excellent protection against wind, spindrift, and condensation drips.
The ripstop weave prevents small holes from spreading. The main benefit of the solid inner is wind and sand protection, while the downside is heat in mid-summer. The upper half of the door is mesh to allow for some ventilation, but it can definitely feel stuffy in hot, low-altitude environments.
Structure and Construction
The fly features factory seam taping (hot-press bonded), eliminating the need for messy home seam sealing. The PEU (Polyether Urethane) coating is on the inside, ensuring the tape bonds permanently.
The zippers are YKK #5 AquaGuard (water-resistant). The #5 on the Solid is beefier than the #3 on the standard mesh version, providing a more robust feel. The dual sliders allow for operation from both inside and out, sized for use with gloves in the rain.
The guy lines are low-stretch 3mm cord with Lineloc 3 tensioners. However, Linelocs are known to slip occasionally, a problem reported by some Solid users as well. Many users (myself included) eventually swap these for Dyneema or Z-Line cords for more security in high winds.

Why I Chose the Solid Over the Pro
I'll be honest.
At first, I thought, "If I'm buying one, I might as well get the Pro." The X-Mid Pro 1 (DCF) weighs about 440g (15.5 oz)—450g (15.9 oz) lighter than the Solid. Over many miles, that weight savings is undeniable.
But the more I researched, the more cautious I became about the Pro.
First Concern: DCF Lifespan. Based on reviews and material data, DCF has an expected lifespan of 150-200 nights, whereas Silpoly is rated for 300+ nights. With a $300 price difference, if the Pro needs replacing twice as fast, the cost-per-night becomes significantly higher. DCF also has low abrasion resistance; once the thin Mylar film layers are compromised, pinholes appear. Given the rocky and abrasive terrain often found in Japanese mountains, this was a major factor.
Second Concern: Ease of Repair. Silpoly is relatively easy to patch with seam tape or silicone adhesive. DCF construction uses hot-bonding rather than sewing, which is difficult to repair reliably in the field. I wanted a tent that I could trust to handle mishaps on the trail.
Third Concern: Intended Use. Looking at my hiking style, I mostly hike exposed ridges in the 3-seasons, low-altitude snow in winter, and through long autumn rains. Ultralight weight is a priority for fastpacking or long-distance thru-hiking, but for me, stability in wind and rain and long-term reliability were more valuable than saving 450g (15.9 oz).
Choosing the Solid wasn't "giving up on the Pro"; it was recognizing that the Solid better suited my current phase as a hiker. (Though, if I ever transition heavily into high-mileage fastpacking, I might very well buy a Pro then!)

Final Verdict: Value for Money
I believe the Solid is an exceptionally well-rounded entry into the UL world.
At ~$300, it’s a significant investment, but when you consider the interior volume, the level of wind-resistant engineering, and the long-term reliability of the materials, the value is high.
Is it "The One" or just "The One for Now"? For me, the Solid is definitely "The One."
I didn't choose it as a compromise; I chose it because it fits my style perfectly. Even with the Pro looming in the background, I have zero regrets about my choice.
Epilogue: Field Experience
After six months with the Solid, I've taken it through autumn and winter in the Japanese mountains.
November 2025: Mt. Kumotori
Stayed at Kumotori-sanso. The night brought heavy winds, but the tent held firm without issue.

January 2026: Okutama (Heavy Snow)
A night of heavy snowfall. The steep walls shed snow well, and I slept soundly.
