Hikers arriving from drier climates plan for the heat and miss the real problem: humidity. A Japanese summer mountain can sit at 30°C with 70–80% humidity, and in that air your sweat barely evaporates. Evaporation is how the body sheds heat, so when it stalls, your core temperature keeps climbing. The same 30°C that feels manageable on a dry ridge becomes punishing on a muggy, windless forest climb. Visitors run out of water, and run into heat illness, because they budgeted for the number on the thermometer, not the air around it.
The fix is to decide three things before you start: how much water to carry, what to drink, and where you'll refill. Get those right and you avoid both running dry and the opposite, less obvious trap of drinking too much plain water.
How much water: estimate from body weight and time
Guessing your water by feel almost always comes up short. Mountain physiology gives a rough working estimate of how much you'll sweat out while moving:
Water needed (mL) = 5 × body weight (kg) × hours of activity
In summer heat (25°C and up), raise that coefficient from 5 to 6–8. Heavy sweaters also use 6–8; light sweaters can use 3–4. A heavy pack pushes it up too. So a 60 kg hiker out for 8 summer hours, at coefficient 6, needs about 6 × 60 × 8 ≈ 2.9 L of sweat replacement — and once you add water for cooking and a reserve, you're over 3 L. "A litre will probably do" is how people get into trouble.
The numbers above are sweat replacement for a hot day (coefficient 6); add cooking and reserve water on top, and scale up for fierce heat, no wind, a heavy load, or if you sweat a lot. The key habit is to drink ahead, not behind — sip a mouthful every 15–20 minutes rather than chasing the deficit later. By the time you feel thirsty, you are already dehydrating. The simplest field check on whether you're keeping up is your urine: clear to pale straw means you're on track; dark yellow means you're already behind.
Not just how much — what's in it: the plain-water trap
Running dry is one danger; its opposite is the other. Drinking large amounts of plain water has its own trap. Sweat takes sodium out along with water. Pour only plain water back in and your blood sodium gets diluted — at which point your brain reads "dehydration solved" and stops wanting water, even though you're now low on salt and awash in water.
Pushed far enough, this becomes exercise-associated hyponatremia (water intoxication). Reports link the risk to drinking 0.8–1.0 L per hour of electrolyte-free water. The nasty part is that the early symptoms mimic dehydration — headache and nausea — so "I have a headache, I'll gulp more water" can make the wrong case worse. Putting salt (electrolytes) in with your water is the move that's right either way.

In Japan you'll find sports drinks (Pocari Sweat, Aquarius) and ORS (OS-1) at any drugstore or convenience store, and salt/electrolyte tablets are light and cheap — worth carrying as a set with your water. Run your day on water-plus-salt or a sports drink, and keep one ORS in reserve as the card to play when you're genuinely dehydrated and feeling bad.
WBGT and the plan: shift time and place on hot days
How dangerous a day is can't be read from temperature alone. Japan's environmental agency uses WBGT (the heat index), which combines air temperature with humidity and radiant heat. High humidity stops sweat evaporating, so the same 30°C in a muggy forest hits far harder than the number suggests.
WBGT activity guideline (Japan Ministry of the Environment): 25–28 = caution (rest and drink actively) · 28–31 = severe caution (stop hard exertion, frequent rest) · 31+ = stop exercise as a rule. A heat-stroke alert is issued at a daily peak WBGT of 33+.
The mountains have few WBGT stations, but the figure near your trailhead — plus how humid and windless it is — tells you whether it's a brutal day. On brutal days, start early, gain your elevation and distance in the cool hours, and cut midday exertion — which lines up neatly with the early start that avoids afternoon thunderstorms. And plan around water: mark the water sources on your route and the round-trip time to reach them. Running dry is often a planning failure, not a toughness one. A simple on-trail backstop when your next refill isn't certain: once you've drunk half your water, treat that as a turn-around trigger — regardless of how close the summit looks.
Early signs and when to turn around: stages I, II, III
Heat illness is graded by severity (the Japanese Association for Acute Medicine's classification). Knowing which stage you're looking at drives the call to keep moving, rest, or call for help.
- Stage I (mild): light-headedness, muscle cramps, heavy sweating. → Rest in the shade, take water and salt, see if you recover.
- Stage II (moderate): headache, nausea or vomiting, fatigue, weakness, can't drink on your own. → Stop. If you don't recover, decide to descend or call for rescue.
- Stage III (severe): clouded consciousness, odd responses, convulsions, can't walk straight. → Life-threatening. Cool the body and call for rescue without hesitation.
The decisive habit: when Stage II signs appear, drop the "we're almost there." Headache and nausea are dangerous signals shared by dehydration, hyponatremia, and heat illness alike. Once someone can't drink on their own or isn't responding clearly, it's past the point of insisting on self-descent. Hands-on treatment and evacuation calls belong to a proper course and the rescue services — not something to improvise from an article.
Five ways into water trouble — don't take them
- Rationing water as you climb. Holding back "in case" lets dehydration arrive first. Drink ahead, in small frequent sips.
- Waiting until you're thirsty. Thirst means you're already low. Make it a sip every 15–20 minutes.
- Guzzling large amounts of plain water. It dilutes your salt and triggers hyponatremia. Put salt in with the water.
- Pushing the plan on a high-WBGT day. Ease the plan, start earlier. Plans are allowed to break.
- Insisting on self-descent while unwell. If Stage II signs don't recover, switch to calling for help.
