Crossing Streams in Japan's Rainy Season: When to Cross, When to Turn Back

A calm stream is not a safe stream

Many of Japan's classic hikes — long ridge traverses in the Northern and Southern Alps, valley approaches, old pilgrimage routes — include unbridged stream crossings (tosho). On a dry day most are an easy rock-hop. In the rainy season (tsuyu, roughly early June to mid-July) and through the summer storm season, the same crossing can become the most dangerous moment of your hike.

The trap is that moving water lies about its strength. A stream that looks like a gentle, knee-deep flow can take an adult off their feet. People drown in water that "didn't look that bad." So the skill here is not bravado about crossing — it is having a clear, numbers-based line for when to cross and when to turn back, decided before you step in. This guide gives you that line, built on three things: water depth, flow speed, and your escape route.

Why rainy-season crossings are deceptively dangerous

The difficulty of a crossing is not set by depth alone. It is depth multiplied by speed — and the force of moving water climbs out of proportion to how fast it looks.

In basic fluid dynamics, the force flowing water puts on an object (your legs) is proportional to the square of the speed. Double the speed and the force on your legs goes up four times. A flow just 1.4× faster pushes about twice as hard. So when last night's rain has made the stream "a little quicker," the pressure on your legs has grown far more than your eyes report. That is why a swollen crossing is more dangerous than it looks.

Japan's rainy-season streams are especially tricky because that speed changes fast. Rain falling upstream arrives at your crossing point on a delay — tens of minutes to hours later. You might cross knee-deep on the way out and find it thigh-deep on the way back. On a valley route, the question is not "is it raining here?" but "what fell upstream?" It can be sunny over your head and rising at your feet.

Put a number on "swept away": depth × speed

Feeling alone misjudges a swollen flow. So carry a couple of sourced numbers as a ruler.

The U.S. Geological Survey, whose staff wade rivers to measure flow, use a field safety rule of thumb called the "Rule of Ten": do not enter water where depth (in feet) × speed (in feet per second) exceeds 10 — for example, 2 ft deep × 5 ft/s. Converted to metric, the danger line is depth (m) × speed (m/s) ≈ 0.9.

The point that should stop you: once water reaches your thighs, a flow that merely looks like walking pace is already at the limit. At the waist, even a slow-looking current is a no. And remember this is the threshold for a fit worker carrying instruments — a tired hiker under a heavy pack should keep a wide margin on the safe side of it.

Measuring the speed without a meter: float a stick. Pick a 5-metre stretch along the bank, drop a light twig at the top, and count the seconds to the bottom. 5 m in 3 seconds ≈ 1.7 m/s; 5 m in 5 seconds ≈ 1.0 m/s. Multiply by the depth and see how close you are to 0.9. If the twig shoots away, the flow is fast for your legs too.

Flood-evacuation research says the same thing: Japanese government studies of past floods found that once water passes knee height (about 0.5 m), most adults can no longer walk through it. Moving water carries far more force than the still water at the same depth.

Decide three things before you cross

Technique comes second. Whether you cross at all matters more than how well you cross.

Escape route — can you back out? The most important question at any crossing is can I stop partway and return? If you reach the middle, realise it's too much, and cannot retreat in good balance, a single misjudgement becomes an accident. If any part of you suspects you couldn't get back, don't choose that crossing.

Crossing point — wide and shallow. The same stream varies hugely along its length. Narrow, deep sections run fast; wide, shallow ones slow down. Walk a little up- and downstream to find where the flow spreads out and shallows. The shortest line is rarely the safest one. Water that runs smooth (not standing in waves) and lets you see the bottom is usually shallower and gentler.

Timing — morning over afternoon, and wait after rain. Summer streams rise with afternoon storms and overnight rain, and many fall again once the rain stops and time passes. If it's too high, waiting for the level to drop is a real and respectable decision — build "turn back or wait it out" into your plan from the start. An early start avoids both afternoon rises and afternoon thunderstorms.

If you decide to cross: don't let the water take you

Once you've judged a spot crossable, how you move decides whether you stay on your feet.

  • Keep your boots on. The bottom is rocky and slick; bare feet mean cuts and lost grip. Footing beats keeping your boots dry.
  • Shuffle, feeling for stable rock. Lifting a foot high leaves you on one leg. Slide your soles along the bottom and shift weight only onto rock that doesn't wobble.
  • Plant your pole (or a stout stick) upstream. An upstream anchor gives you three points of support against the push; move so that pole-plus-feet always keeps two points down.
  • Move at a downstream angle. Fighting straight into the current burns your legs out. Angle slightly downstream and let the flow slide past you.
  • Unbuckle your hip and chest straps. If you go in, you must be able to shed the pack instantly — or hug it as a float. Buckled on, a water-logged pack drags you down.

With a group, you can link arms into a scrum and cross as one mass, more stable than crossing singly; the person upstream shields the others from the flow.

If you are swept off your feet

This is the last resort after every "don't cross" judgement has failed — never cross relying on it.

  • Get on your back and point your feet downstream (defensive swimming): take rock impacts with your feet and protect your head. Face-down, head-downstream is the most dangerous position.
  • Do not try to stand up in the current. If a foot jams between bottom rocks, the flow pushes your upper body over and you cannot get free (foot entrapment). Keep your feet off the bottom until the water is clearly shallow and slow.
  • Use your pack as a float — if the belts are unbuckled, hug it to your chest for buoyancy.

Rescue and first aid for hypothermia, trauma, or near-drowning are not things to improvise from an article — learn them from a course or the professionals. The one thing that is always true: a good decision not to cross beats every technique for what happens after you're swept away.

Five ways into the water — don't take them

  1. Crossing because you "can't wait." Waiting for the level to drop, or turning back, is correct judgement, not defeat. Plans are allowed to break.
  2. Jumping rock to rock. Wet rock is slick; land badly and the momentum makes it worse. Shuffle.
  3. Crossing with your pack belts buckled. You can't shed it when you need to.
  4. Stepping into murky water you can't see the bottom of. You can't judge depth, obstacles, or your depth × speed number.
  5. Crossing waist-deep flow alone. Buoyancy makes you unstable and recovery fails. Waist-deep is a no unless every condition lines up.

The bottom line

The hikers who walk the mountains for a long time are the ones who can choose "turn back" with the same weight as "cross." Standing at a swollen stream, run the three checks — how high is the water, how fast is the flow, and can I get back partway — and you can make that choice with a clear head instead of hope. There is no zero-risk in the mountains, and the final call is always yours and your party's, made standing at the water. That is exactly why you want to carry as much decision-making material as you can.
