The mountains break your skin in two different ways
A few days into a Japanese summer hike, two things tend to go wrong with skin, and they feel unrelated. On exposed ridges your ears and the backs of your hands burn. Down in your boots, on day three, your heels and the balls of your feet crack. They seem like separate problems — but underneath, it's the same thing failing: the skin barrier. Once you see that, the defenses for your face, ears, hands, and feet line up into one logic.
The outer skin is often described as "bricks and mortar": tough cells held together by fats, holding water inside. Skin is supple because it holds water — like leather, it bends when damp and cracks when dry. Japan's mountains attack that barrier from two directions: UV destroys the exposed surfaces, and drying, sweat, and friction wreck the extremities. Different enemies, different fixes.
Exposed skin (face, ears, hands): UV is a delayed poison
Mountain UV differs from the lowlands in one decisive way: you get it from above and below. UV rises about 10% per 1,000 m of elevation as the protective air thins, and then the ground adds reflection — fresh snow bounces back roughly 80% of UV on a clear day. On a snowy spring ridge you can take close to 1.8× the dose, and thin cloud barely helps, since much UV passes straight through. That sudden "stronger" feeling when you leave the forest is real — it's a question of quantity.
Ears are the classic missed spot — and a common skin-cancer site. People who cream their face skip the ears entirely, yet the upper ear is thin skin over cartilage, angled straight at a high sun. Easy to hit, easy to forget. The other burn spots for hikers are the same overlooked edges: the nose, the back of the neck, the forearms, the backs of the hands.
UV is a delayed poison: it damages skin-cell DNA now, and the un-repaired share accumulates silently into wrinkles, spots, and — years later — skin cancer, with no pain to warn you. Which makes it more serious than a cracked heel, not less.
The defense: stop planning to reapply — cover instead. Sunscreen's protection drops meaningfully after 2–3 hours, and sweat and pack-strap rub remove it faster. "Reapply every two hours" is correct in theory and fails in practice — nobody peels off gloves to re-cream their ears mid-climb. So flip the order:
- Cover what you can with fabric (the real answer): sun gloves for the backs of the hands, a wide brim plus a sun cape or neck gaiter for the neck and upper ears. Physical shade doesn't wash off.
- For the face, ears, and nose you can't cover, choose for "won't reapply": apply thickly and evenly in the morning, and prefer a water-resistant, mineral (reflective) sunscreen, which lasts better than a chemical one that's consumed over time. And don't chase the SPF number — SPF 30 blocks ~97%, SPF 50 ~98%; the amount you apply matters far more than the figure. High SPF is really insurance against under-applying.
- Aim at the blind spots: ear rims and their backs, nose tip, back of the neck, backs of the hands, and lips (use a UV lip balm).
Feet: why they crack on day three
Now the heels. Why do feet that are fine at home split on a multi-day hike? Because the soles (like the palms) are the only hairless skin on the body — built thick with lots of sweat glands but, having no hair follicles, no oil glands to seal in moisture. They dry and harden easily, and hard dry skin cracks at the point where your weight concentrates: the heel and the ball of the foot.
A multi-day hike stacks four insults: sweat macerates the skin inside hot boots, then it dries hard when you take your boots off at camp, weight concentrates on heel and ball, and friction from hours of walking finishes it. Day three is roughly when the soak-and-dry cycle tips over the edge.
The deepest insight in foot care is that blisters and cracks sit at opposite ends of one "moisture pendulum."
Skin slides easily when it's bone-dry and when it's soaking wet. It grips hardest when it's half-damp — exactly the state of a sweaty foot. In that state, every step shears the surface against the layer beneath, the layers separate, fluid fills the gap, and you have a blister (an internal tear, not a surface scrape). Let the same foot dry hard at camp and it cracks instead. So the whole strategy is one idea: push the pendulum to an end — dry it out or lubricate it — and never sit in the half-damp middle. (Tape works because it takes the shearing force in place of your skin.)
The defenses follow directly:
- Kill the dampness: merino socks (they don't macerate or pool sweat like cotton); toe socks if your toe-gaps soften; take boots off at rest stops to dry; air your feet and dry your socks at camp.
- Lubricate the friction points with a long-lasting anti-chafe balm (the kind that dries slick, not plain petroleum jelly that sweats off), applied before the hot spot forms on heel and ball.
- Pre-tape the repeat offenders — cover heel and ball with stretch tape from the trailhead, not after they hurt.
- Seal cracks with petroleum jelly or a crack ointment; a hydrocolloid "wound" plaster over a split heel cuts the per-step pain sharply. Note: high-urea creams sting open cracks — use them only as prevention on hard, intact skin, in the days before a trip.
Hands: dried and chafed, burned at the same time
Hands take a double hit. The skin is thin with few oil glands, and dry high-altitude air, wind, water tasks, and alcohol sanitizer strip its oils — so it roughens, hangnails form, and knuckles crack. The backs of the hands are also a UV blind spot, making them one of the few places where "dried out" and "sunburned" happen on the same surface at once.
- By day, cover with breathable sun gloves — handles UV and abrasion together, and dries fast if wet.
- At night, seal and restore: with hands still slightly damp, apply petroleum jelly or urea cream thickly and sleep in thin cotton gloves. One night brings rough skin a long way back. (Same moisturizers as your feet — one tube does both.)
Timing matters more than product
Whether skin care works comes down less to what you apply than when. Split the day by enemy:

UV is a job for morning prep and physical cover; the extremities are a job for drying out and night-time moisture. Drop the fantasy of fiddly mid-hike reapplication and skin care becomes almost easy.
The bottom line
Everything that breaks your skin in the mountains is, at root, the same barrier failing — UV on the exposed surfaces, drying and friction at the extremities. Treat your skin as gear you prepare before you leave: don't forget the ears and the backs of the hands in the morning, and at camp, dry your feet and seal them with a fat. Spare yourself one cracked heel and the back half of the trip gets a lot lighter.
